St Barts (St Barths) has been dubbed the St Tropez of the Caribbean. The tiny 8 square mile French run island is a celebrity haven that blends sophistication and elegance with the laid-back Caribbean vibe. The entire island is picture perfect with glorious beaches and bougainvillea aplenty, an ideal escape for a luxury Caribbean holiday.
After being discovered by Columbus in 1493, this piece of paradise was swapped between Sweden and France until it finally became part of the French West Indies in 1877 for good. It wasn’t until Rockefeller purchased a piece of the island in the late 50’s that it became a playground for the rich and famous. Today, it’s a firm favourite with the A’list thanks to its good looks, laid-back charm and more than a touch of class.
Why go?
The main reason to visit St Barts is that there isn’t one. There is nothing to do on the island apart from relax and enjoy the 22 fantastic beaches and 100 or so restaurants. It’s all about slow living, getting a tan and sampling some gourmet food. And, since St Barts is crime free you’ll have no keys, no doors to lock and no worries. It’s literally a safe haven in the West Indies.

Excuse me, who, what, where is Curacao? – A question I’ve been asked a gazillion times.
My reaction would be: dude, you didn’t pay much attention to those geography lessons did you? Caribbean islands should not be an exception, since you’re planning on retiring someday.
Uh-Oh.. My thought exactly.
The Caribbean is a popular tourist destination. When people want to escape the colder climates, the Caribbean is one of those destinations that people think of. Warm weather, sun, beautiful beaches… these are all things that people think of when they consider the Caribbean. It is the ultimate destination for people who wish to relax and unwind and spend their time soaking up the sun.
It is also a popular cruise destination. Cruises are popular because you pay one fee up front and pretty much everything is included. The ships are rich with luxury. When people are there, they feel as if they are treated like royalty. The desire to relax, unwind, and get pampered is well mixed with destinations such as the Caribbean. You can spend your time on the ship getting pampered and enjoying the facilities on the boat. And then when you get to the land, you can experience the best of what the Caribbean has to offer.
If you are thinking of taking a trip to the Caribbean, those are the two options you will need to consider. Do you want to go on a cruise or book the vacation yourself on the land? The advantage of the cruise is that everything is pretty much included except for the excursions. The disadvantage is that your time on the land is limited and you may not be done with a location before it is time to leave port. If you want to spend your whole vacation on the beach or exploring all that the Caribbean has to offer, it is probably a good idea to skip the cruise.
Over the past twenty years, the islands of Caribbean have been a region synonymous with luxury travel and holidays. To date these have proven highly successful as investors from the US and UK look to acquire their own slice of paradise.
Without doubt, this popular and yet highly diverse region, offers considerable potential for investment return in the long term. The ever popular tourism industry throughout the Caribbean is as popular today as it has ever been, and with the increasing numbers of cheaper airlines now accessing the region, the prospects seem even brighter for investors in the region.
Whilst it would be wrong to describe the Caribbean as an emerging market, a number of factors have certainly aligned in the past couple of years which have resulted in the region becoming a more viable option for overseas investors. Key to this is the political and economic stability which can be found throughout the region. The governments of the Caribbean islands are in fact a collection of independent democracies, which act tend to act on a more unilateral basis on a global basis. This cohesive presentation has undoubtedly provided investors with a feeling of increased stability and security throughout the region, and has resulted in the levels of foreign direct investment increasing considerably in recent years.
