There is a new town, situated on 500 acres stretching from the Caribbean sea to the North Sound, being built on Grand Cayman. It is called Camana Bay after the original name for the Cayman Islands, Las Camanas. It has a cinema, shopping centre, restaurant, condos, a salon/spa, common areas, and business offices. It’s ever-growing and additional stores and restaurants will open in the near future. Most recently, they’ve opened the water-front docks and the observation tower where you can see panoramic views of the Island.

The Observation Tower is free of charge, and is open from sunrise to 10pm daily and provides 360 degree views of Grand Cayman beyond Camana Bay and including Seven Mile Beach, George Town and the marine parks of the North Sound.

The staircases are decorated with a floor to ceiling mosaic depicting Cayman’s reefs and marine life. This gives the effect of ascending a deep sea dive from the sea bed to surface. The mosaic is constructed of countless tiles in 114 different colours and has grown to one of the largest undersea mosaics in the world. The is also a lift to the top of The Tower.

The Crescent, which is a waterfront plaza, will include restaurants, all with outdoor tables and harbour views, a boardwalk encircling the waterfront, an interactive fountain with sprays reaching 30 feet into the air and an amphitheatre.

The Paseo is the pedestrian main street of the Town Centre which has stores, restaurants, offices and parking. The Town Centre is Grand Cayman’s newest shopping destination offering a dynamic mix of international brands and local retailers. The first restaurant to open at Camana Bay was Abacus in May 2008, situated at the crossroads of The Paseo and Market Street.

Restaurant Row will offer six waterfront restaurants with a choice of cuisines from around the world and a range of styles from fine dining to informal family restaurants.

Camana Bay also offers recreational opportunities, ranging from cycling or jogging along the town’s many trails to boating on the canals. There are also water sports facilities on the North Sound. For the more serious sports enthusiasts there are facilities available (out of school hours) on the Cayman International School’s Campus, such as a FIFA-rated football pitch, a 25m swimming pool, and tennis and basketball courts.

If you would like to visit by sea it is possible to moor at one of 20 public boat slips on a manmade beach situated in the middle of the harbour. This manmade beach is called ‘The Island’. A pedestrian bridge connects it to the middle of the town.

Shopping at Camana Bay has become more luxurious with the introduction of Valet Parking.

Christmas 2009 will be marked with a 24 foot Christmas Tree complete with lights based in the Crescent. Santa Claus will also be there to light the tree!
