The Caribbean is one of the most popular exotic holiday destinations. The Dominican Republic was the most popular Caribbean island in 2009, with almost 4 million visitors in 2009. Located on the island of Hispaniola, it’s one of two Caribbean islands that is shared by two countries – the western third of the island is occupied by Haiti.

In the 1490’s the Dominican Republic became the site of the first permanent European settlement in the Americas, and Spain’s first capital in the New World.

The Dominican Republic has the second largest economy in the Caribbean, dominated by the services industry despite its reputation for sugar production. It’s tourism that fuels the country’s economic growth, representing an estimated one in every seven jobs.
